Adjustable dumbbells replace a rack of fixed weights with a single pair, but the designs differ a lot: how heavy they go, how finely you can change the load, how quickly the mechanism works and how much abuse it tolerates.

Pick a range that covers the heaviest dumbbell work you do now plus room to progress. Buying far above your needs adds cost and bulk; buying too light limits presses, rows and lower-body work sooner than you expect.
Progressive overload is the core principle of strength training. Jumps of 2.5 lb are easier to progress with on lighter movements (raises, curls) than 5 or 10 lb jumps, which can be a large relative increase.
Dials and twist handles tend to be the fastest to change; pin and block designs are often more compact and robust; plate-switch systems keep a traditional shape. Plastic-heavy mechanisms are the most common source of reported failures.
Long adjustable dumbbells can touch the body during presses or curls, and block or cage designs can interfere with some movements. Check the length at maximum load and the head shape if you do many overhead or close-to-body exercises.
Most adjustable dumbbells should not be dropped. If you train to failure or tend to set weights down hard, prioritise all-metal construction, manufacturer drop testing and a longer warranty with available replacement parts.
