How We Evaluate Fitness Equipment
How we evaluate fitness equipment, what our scores mean — and what they do not mean.
Last updated September 2026
Four kinds of information, kept separate
- Specifications — measurable characteristics stated by the manufacturer (load range, increments, dimensions, materials, warranty). We report them as stated; they are labelled “Source: manufacturer listing”.
- Manufacturer claims — statements such as drop-test ratings or durability claims. Reported as claims, not verified.
- External customer ratings — Amazon star ratings and review counts, shown with their source and the date they were checked. They reflect user experience on another platform; they are not LiftEvidence ratings.
- Editorial assessment — our interpretation of the above: strengths, drawbacks, who a product suits and the scores below.
Where training science is relevant, we cite the research and indicate its type (for example, a meta-analysis or a position statement).
What we evaluate
For each category we define criteria that matter for that type of equipment. We do not force the same criteria onto every category. For adjustable dumbbells the dimensions are:
- Build quality: Materials (steel/cast iron vs plastic), construction of the plates and locking parts.
- Durability: Drop tolerance, warranty length, replacement parts and recurring failure reports.
- Adjustment: Speed and reliability of changing weight, and how fine the increments are.
- Ergonomics: Handle diameter and knurling, balance, length and interference with movements.
- Versatility: Weight range, increment options and the range of exercises it suits.
- Value: What the buyer gets (range, build, warranty) relative to its price band.
- Heavy training: Maximum load and stability of the mechanism under heavy loads.
- Compactness: Length at maximum load and storage footprint.
How the scores work
Each dimension is scored from 0 to 10 by the editorial team, applying the same criteria to every product in the category. Scores are relative to the other products we cover, based on the specifications, stated construction and recurring customer-review themes. There is no overall score: which dimensions matter depends on your training, space and budget.
If there is not enough verified information to score a product consistently, we leave it unscored and say so rather than estimating.
What the scores do not mean
- They are not laboratory measurements or the result of physical testing.
- They are not a ranking of which product is “best” for everyone.
- They are not influenced by affiliate commissions.
What we do not do
- Accept payment for editorial placement, rankings or scores.
- Claim to have tested products we have not tested.
- Write, commission or invent reviews.
- Treat manufacturer marketing as independent evidence.
- Show prices or discounts we cannot verify — check the current price on the retailer's site.
